FAQS

DO I NEED A REFERRAL?

You can refer yourself to Physiotherapy. I will communicate with your GP and advise you if I think you need to be reviewed by your GP.

CAN I BE TREATED UNDER ACC?

Often pelvic issues are not covered by ACC. However if you have had an injury I can help you complete the ACC paperwork.
Some child birth trauma and treatment injury claims can be covered by ACC. We can discuss these in more detail.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER MY VISIT?

Some insurance policies do cover Physiotherapy. Please check your individual policy for pre approval and to ensure you can be reimbursed. I can directly invoice Southern Cross claims, but for all other companies you will have to pay at the end of treatment and request reimbursement.

HOW LONG IS AN APPOINTMENT?

The initial appointment will usually be an hour.  Follow up appointments can be shorter (30 or 45 minutes).

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

It is important on the first assessment that I get a thorough history on your concerns. I often do a physical assessment too on the first appointment, but this will depend on our discussion. There is usually a lot of advice/education given on that first session.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

If you need a physical exam, this may include a posture and/or pelvic joint examination. Come in loose clothing (not jeans) or even bring some shorts.

HOW MANY APPOINTMENTS WILL I NEED?

This can vary from just one appointment to several appointments depending on your problems. I do aim to promote self management so usually you will be given "home work" and we will review.

WILL I NEED AN INTERNAL EXAMINATION?

A pelvic floor examination is often required to accurately determine what pelvic floor exercises are given.
Pelvic floor muscles can be weak, tight, sore, have decreased sensation or even be a mixture. Often I will get a good idea of your muscle tone from the history you give me but ultimately an internal examination is the best way of fully understanding your problems. It can also be very educational for you!
But there are always alternatives to having an internal exam and I will always offer you these options.

CAN I BRING SOMEONE WITH ME?

You are always welcome to bring a support person with you. Children are welcome too.
